Rubenstein Ecosystems Laboratory

Two story building utilizing steel framing, precast concrete plank, concrete masonry shear and bearing walls, monotube piles and concrete grade beams. Structure was specifically designed to improve the energy and efficiency of the bulding by creating thermal mass and avoiding thermal and moisture breaks through the envelope of the bulding.


Waste Water Treatment Facility Upgrade
Burlington, Vermont

KCE designed new concrete clarifiers, vortex separator and grit removing tankage. KCE also designed the addition to the control building and new buildings enclosing the grit removing tankage and the headworks.

Awards include: LEED Certification, 2005 Efficiency Vermont Excellence in Comprehensive Building Design Award, Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence, 2005 ACEC Engineering Excellence runner-up and the "Show us You're Green" award from the American Institute of Architects.

KCE was recently awarded the 2006 ACEC Grand Award for Engineering Excellence for their structural design and geotechnical work on the Metropark Hood Residences. Criteria for the judging was based on: how successfully the project met the needs of the client, uniqueness and originality of the solution, social and economic considerations, complexity of the problem and technical value of the solution to the engineering profession.

KCE provided structural and geotechnical engineering services for the 58,000 square foot addition as well as major renovations to the original 55,000 square foot school. Renovations included upgrading the existing structural systems to meet current seismic codes and the addition of a band room above the existing cafeteria. Structural systems included steel framing, steel bracing and concrete masonry bearing and shear walls.

IBM Microelectronics Penthouse Additions
Essex Junction, Vermont

KCE has designed numerous second floor additions to existing one story manufacturing buildings at the IBM facility in Essex Junction, including foundation and seismic system upgrades.
